What are analgesics?

A medicine that relieves pain without putting you to sleep or causing you to lose consciousness is technically referred to as an analgesics. Analgesics are commonly known as painkillers because of their property of treating pains, such as headaches, injuries, and joint problems. Opioid analgesics and anti-inflammatory analgesics have the property to alter the interpretation of pain by the brain. At De Addiction Centre in Greater Noida we help in overcoming such addictions.

Types of analgesics

There are three main types of analgesics:

  • Simple Analgesics
  • Compound Analgesics
  • Opioid Analgesics

Examples of the different types of analgesia are -

1. Simple Analgesics

Simple analgesics are the most common form of analgesics. They are also known as non-opioid analgesics. Simple analgesics include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like NSAIDs and acetaminophen.

Examples of simple analgesics include-

  1. Aspirin
  2. Diclofenic
  3. Naproxen
  4. Naproxen sodium
  5. Diclofenac
  6. Ibuprofen
  7. Indomethacin
  8. Etodolac
  9. Oxaprozin
  10. Nabumetone

2. Compound analgesics

Compound analgesics are medications containing a mixture of non-opioid analgesics and opioid analgesics. Examples of compound analgesics include co-codamol, co-codaprin and co-dydramol.

3. Opioid analgesics

There are two types of opioid analgesics i.e. natural analgesics and synthetic analgesics. Examples of opioid analgesics include:

  • Oxycodone
  • Codeine
  • Hydrocodone
  • Fentanyl
  • Tramadol
  • Morphine
  • Meperidine
  • Methadone
  • Oxycodone

How do these Analgesics work?

The two main categories of analgesics are anti-inflammatory analgesics and opioid analgesics. Anti-inflammatory medications act by lessening inflammation at the source of pain. Examples of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.

  • Acetaminophen
  • COX inhibitors with aspirin
  • NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen

Are analgesics safe?

When analgesics are prescribed by a physician for a short period of time and in appropriate amounts, the majority of analgesics are regarded as safe. Certain analgesics like ibuprofen and acetaminophen are safer to use than others. They should only be used in specific circumstances and under close supervision because they have the potential to become addicted.

A number of significant hazards, like respiratory disorders, opioid use disorder, depression and lethal overdose have been linked to narcotic analgesics.Diclofenac and celecoxib are the two NSAIDs that are more prone to cause these symptoms. So they are recommended not to be used, especially before or after heart surgery.

There is also risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects while using certain NSAIDs such as aspirin, indomethacin and ketorolac. Children and teenagers under the age of 18 should not use the majority of NSAIDs.

Risks and side effects

Taking analgesics have a lot of side effects. Especially if analgesics like NSAIDs are mixed with anticoagulants drugs they can cause severe side effects-

  • Headaches
  • Stomach ache
  • Indigestion
  • Dizziness
  • Bleeding
  • Swollen ankles
  • Difficulty in urinating
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Allergic reactions to sunlight
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Heart problems
